Internal visit Part 2

Protecting the place, a couple dressed according to the 15th century custom are standing on a socle facing the staircase : they are said to be Robert de Coningham and his wife, Louise Chenin.

.

At the other end of this building, another staircase allows us to reach the thick round tower that stands above the moat and that contains, on the first floor, the treasure room. It's a small room, badly lit by a single loophole. At the top of the ribbed vault are represented the Coningham's arms." with the pairle "of Coningham (the pairle being the heraldic part in the form of a Y visible on this blazon) Sculptures also decorate the angles : a woman, a monk, a bat and an owl.

On the first floor, marvelous frames shaped like a boat hull can be admired.

Now, we can visit the old tower, closed by a heavily studded door. Insides, a trap door gives access to a gloomy dungeon.

Surprisingly, there is no chapel in or near the castle. Was it destroyed through a siege and no rebuilt by the protestant lords of Cherveux ? The mystery remains.
