The appelation Haut Poitou covers 800 ha spread over the Vienne and Deux-Sèvres departments. The Romans grew grapes here. The local wine gradually developed, to earn its reputation when Eleanor of Aquitaine, countess of Poitou, aquired her own vineyard.here
