The county of La Marche was detached in the 10th century from the province of Limousin to fight against the Normans. It was then divided into fiefdoms with moving borders: Haute Marche (around Guéret), Vicomté de Bridiers (La Souterraine), Basse Marche (around Le Dorat). It covered a territory corresponding to the department of Creuse, the district of Bellac in Haute-Vienne and some communes of the department of Vienne and Charente.
